Retention: Why your fitness app bleeds users
Guilt doesn't work. How to use streaks, periodization, and social hooks correctly.
The average fitness app loses 80% of its users by Day 30. They download it on January 1st, use it three times, and then ignore the push notifications until they cancel the trial.
Why Streaks Fail
Duolingo streaks work because doing 3 minutes of Spanish on the toilet is easy. A 45-minute gym session requires planning, travel, and physical exertion. If your app relies on a daily streak, a single sick day ruins the user's motivation. They break the streak, feel like a failure, and churn.
Implement "Forgiving Streaks"
Measure consistency on a weekly basis, not daily. "3 workouts this week" is a far more robust metric than "7 days in a row." Allow users to set their own weekly targets.
The Social Hook
Strava isn't a tracking app; it's a social network for people who own expensive bicycles. If you can build a mechanism where a user's friend validates their effort (kudos, comments), retention doubles.
